Burkina Faso's defense and security forces have officially received an initial batch of "Nanga" armored vehicles, representing a major achievement in the country's push for domestic defense production.
Burkina Faso has delivered its first batch of domestically adapted 'Nanga' armored vehicles to its defense forces.
The project was led by Burkinabe engineer Thierry Alain Belemkoabga and developed over more than 24 months.
The vehicles, which won an innovation award, feature bodies and key components made within Burkina Faso.
This initiative supports a nationwide push for defense self-reliance, including the launch of a local military uniform factory.
As reported by Lanouvelle Tribune, the delivery of these "locally adapted and modified units" follows a September 13 announcement on the Burkinabe Presidency's official Facebook page.
Captain Ibrahim Traore promotes locally made defense equipment
The deployment fulfills Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s vision of equipping the nation's military with equipment built or adapted inside the country.

Engineer Thierry Alain Belemkoabga spearheaded the vehicle project, leading a team of Burkinabe engineers and technicians through more than 24 months of development.
Before its deployment, the prototype earned an innovation award at a prominent exhibition, where officials revealed that the vehicle's body and several primary components were designed and manufactured in Burkina Faso.
The prototype was developed to handle "various configurations, including troop transport and medical evacuation," prior to undergoing formal testing and certification.
Burkina Faso, Russia, and Sahel nations are shifting away from Western ties
The rollout of the "Nanga" armored vehicles aligns with a broader government plan in Burkina Faso to diminish its dependence on foreign military suppliers.
Just days prior to the vehicle delivery, national leaders inaugurated the TEXFORCES-BF industrial complex in Bobo-Dioulasso to manufacture military uniforms locally.
Representing an investment of 17 billion CFA francs, the facility works alongside the armored vehicle initiative to establish comprehensive domestic defense manufacturing.
Together, these projects demonstrate how Burkina Faso is building industrial infrastructure to support its security forces internally.
Alongside these self-reliance efforts, Burkina Faso has actively realigned its international partnerships away from historical Western allies toward Moscow.
As reported by Business Insider Africa, military-led governments in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have all "moved closer to Russia after expelling French troops and reducing security cooperation with Western governments".
This change in foreign military ally is part of a broader movement across the Sahel where Western influence has gradually weakened, allowing Russia to position itself as a "leading alternative partner to the West."
