A shortlist of 39 Nigerian universities that have produced the most startup founders in the country today has the University of Nigeria bringing up the rear, with its name on one company named Flameless.
On this list, peers like Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have 16 startups that include unicorns such as Flutterwave and Moniepoint.
Covenant University, founded in 2002, was a distant second, with six of its graduates founding six startups, including Piggyvest.
While hostels are rotting away and the VC finds better use for his time in flying abroad and rebuilding university gates, the newly established private universities are producing wealth creators.
What should universities be doing if not producing graduates who can change society, improve lives, and create value? Let us take OAU as an example. The combined valuation of Flutterwave and Moniepoint, at $4.5 billion, can build at least 4 other Covenant Universities. In local speak, Covenant University has reproduced itself from just two of its students, just 14 years later.
While UNN is busy putting question marks on her own certificate from the VC level, the newly created universities are creating revolutions in manpower development and adding value to society.
UNN is, however, not the only laggard giant. University of Benin has just one successful startup. Mitchell Elegbe’s Interswitch has a valuation of $750million and can be counted as a pioneer in the businesses incubated by Nigerians that became highly successful in the tech world
Babcock University is another private university who are proudly on the log. With two successful startups founded by her graduates, this university that was founded in 1999, has done quite decently, especially if compared with the big federal universities.
University of Lagos discharged herself fairly with four startups birthed by her products, while University o Ilorin also forced her way in with a single entry.
Covenant university is quietly owns half the fintech ecosystem while Babcock is handling the other half. Their alumni networking is doing more real work than most public university curricula in Nigeria.
Meanwhile our Northern universities are they seem more focused on producing solid employees and government staffs. It is well.
Even the naturally ahead ABU, their top products remain politicians and pastors; again it is also well.
Some northern universities still treat entrepreneurship courses like the most useless subject in the entire semester pack or just something for students to pass and forget.

I commend the universities doing well. But nothing is said about how it was generated. Were all the alumni associations given the opportunity to make entries? What is the population of alumni startups in the country? The list appears like a questionable PR stuff. A properly designed and administered survey will surely produce a more objective and reliable report.
